Origin and meaning

Alleyn Township, located in Pontiac, is crossed from west to east by the Picanoc River. It winds between hills that overlook the valley from about 180 m. This name recalls the memory of Charles Joseph Alleyn, lawyer and politician born in Myrus Wood (Ireland) in 1817, who came to Canada in 1834 and was admitted to the Quebec Bar six years later. He held the positions of mayor of Quebec City (1854-1855), member of the Quebec Legislative Assembly (1854-1867), commissioner of public works (1857), provincial secretary from 1858 to 1862, and sheriff for 24 years in Quebec City, where he died in 1890. An ambitious, realistic, and opportunistic public figure, he nevertheless enjoyed the respect of the Irish and French Canadians. It should be noted that in 1849 he married Zoé, daughter of the famous Philippe Aubert de Gaspé. Proclamation: 1864.

Origine et signification

Le canton d'Alleyn, situé dans le Pontiac, est traversé d'ouest en est par la rivière Picanoc. Celle-ci serpente entre des collines qui surplombent la vallée d'environ 180 m. Ce nom rappelle le souvenir de Charles Joseph Alleyn, avocat et homme politique né à Myrus Wood (Irlande) en 1817, venu au Canada en 1834 et admis au Barreau du Québec, six ans plus tard. Il cumula les charges de maire de Québec (1854-1855), député de Québec à l'Assemblée législative (1854-1867), commissaire des Travaux publics (1857), secrétaire provincial de 1858 à 1862 et shérif pendant 24 ans à Québec, où il décéda en 1890. Homme public ambitieux, réaliste et opportuniste, il a néanmoins joui de la considération des Irlandais et des Canadiens français. On peut noter qu'il avait épousé, en 1849, Zoé, fille du célèbre Philippe Aubert de Gaspé. Proclamation : 1864.
