Origin and meaning

The canton of Angoumois is characterized by a terrain whose relief has an altitude of around 350 m and where numerous and large bodies of water share the space: the Désert, Green, Royal lakes as well as the Tortue and Bras Coupé lakes in particular. Angoumois is a region of France, located between Saintonge and Poitou. It corresponds to the former county of Angoulême, erected as a duchy in 1515 and united to the crown by François I, in 1531. Angoumois provided approximately 180 immigrants to New France during the French Regime. Other cantons in the surrounding area have names evoking regions of France such as: "Artois", "Aunis", "Bourgogne", "Isle-de-France" and "Perche".

Le canton d'Angoumois se caractérise par un terrain dont le relief a une altitude qui se situe autour de 350 m et où les nappes d'eau nombreuses et de grandes dimensions se partagent l'espace : les lacs Désert, Green, Royal ainsi que le lac à la Tortue et celui du Bras Coupé notamment. L'Angoumois est une région de France, située entre la Saintonge et le Poitou. Elle correspond à l'ancien comté d'Angoulême, érigé en duché en 1515 et réuni à la couronne par François Ier, en 1531. L'Angoumois a fourni environ 180 immigrants à la Nouvelle-France durant le Régime français. D'autres cantons des environs portent des noms évoquant des régions de France tels : « Artois », « Aunis », « Bourgogne », « Isle-de-France » et « Perche ».
