Origin and meaning

This canton is watered by the Coulonge River, which flows from northwest to southeast, following the general direction of the lakes and the terrain. To the south, Lake Duval, to the west, Lake Antoine, and to the northwest, the Cinq Milles and Trout Bays of Lake Bryson stand out among a significant number of bodies of water. This uninhabited geographical area, named in 1955, is part of a group of several neighboring cantons whose names recall former French provinces.

Permanently attached to the crown of France in 1482, Anjou, whose capital was Angers, provided New France with several hundred immigrants whose contribution to the language spoken here is considered fundamental. Proclamation: 1966.

Ce canton est arrosé par la rivière Coulonge qui coule, du nord-ouest au sud-est, selon l'orientation générale des lacs et du relief. Au sud, le lac Duval, à l'ouest, le lac Antoine et au nord-ouest, les baies des Cinq Milles et aux Truites du lac Bryson se distinguent parmi un nombre appréciable de nappes d'eau. Cet espace géographique inhabité, dénommé en 1955, fait partie d'un ensemble de plusieurs cantons voisins dont les noms rappellent d'anciennes provinces françaises.

Rattachée définitivement à la couronne de France en 1482, l'Anjou, dont la capitale était Angers, a fourni à la Nouvelle-France plusieurs centaines d'immigrants dont l'apport à la langue parlée ici est jugé fondamental. Proclamation : 1966.
