Origin and meaning

This township, located about fifty kilometers north of Gatineau, is irrigated by the Kazabazua River, a tributary of the Gatineau, which borders it to the east. Partially marshy in its eastern half, its terrain, rather flat, is bathed by several lakes, particularly in the west.

This territory was named in honor of Thomas Cushing Aylwin (1806-1871), criminal lawyer, Member of Parliament for Portneuf (1841), Minister of Justice for Canada East in the first Baldwin-LaFontaine administration (1842-1843), Member of Parliament for Quebec City in the elections of 1844 and 1847, and finally judge in 1848. He died in Montreal on October 14, 1871, three years after resigning his office as judge.

Ce canton, situé à une cinquantaine de kilomètres au nord de Gatineau, est irrigué par la rivière Kazabazua, affluent de la Gatineau, qui le délimite à l'est. Partiellement marécageux dans sa moitié orientale, son terrain, plutôt plat, est baigné par plusieurs lacs, notamment dans l'ouest.

Ce territoire a été nommé en l'honneur de Thomas Cushing Aylwin (1806-1871), criminaliste, député de Portneuf (1841), ministre de la Justice du Canada-Est dans la première administration de Baldwin-LaFontaine (1842-1843), député de la ville de Québec aux élections de 1844 et 1847, et enfin juge en 1848. Il est décédé à Montréal le 14 octobre 1871, trois ans après avoir résigné sa charge de juge.
