Origin and meaning

This township, identified as such on Eugène Taché's map in 1870, is largely occupied by the reservoir that bears the same name. "Baskatong" is an Algonquin word that probably comes from obiskitawang, obaskitaong meaning, according to Father Georges Lemoine, a place where the water is constricted by sand; it probably describes the many re-entrants of the lake prior to the reservoir.

The etymology put forward by Father Joseph-Étienne Guinard gives the meaning of folded lake coming from baskaton, for piskita. He adds that in winter the waters of this lake entity – and this, for various reasons – worked the ice, curved it, and made it fold, hence the origin of this name.

Ce canton, identifié ainsi sur la carte d'Eugène Taché en 1870, est occupé en grande partie par le réservoir qui porte le même nom. « Baskatong » est un mot algonquin qui provient probablement de obiskitawang, obaskitaong signifiant, selon le père Georges Lemoine, endroit où l'eau est resserrée par du sable; il décrit sans doute les nombreux rentrants du lac antérieur au réservoir.

L'étymologie avancée par le père Joseph-Étienne Guinard donne la signification de lac plié provenant de baskaton, pour piskita. Il ajoute qu'en hiver les eaux de cette entité lacustre – et ce, pour diverses raisons – travaillaient la glace, la bombaient et la faisaient plier, d'où l'origine de ce nom.
