Origin and meaning

This township, located 75 km northwest of Hull, was named in honor of Joseph Bouchette (1774-1841). Among the many bodies of water found there, Cedar Lake, Little Cedar Lake, and Blue Sea Lake, inhabited on their perimeter, belong to the watershed of the Gatineau River, which flows east of the township.

Joseph Bouchette, who had a civil and military career, distinguished himself as Surveyor General of Lower Canada, replacing his uncle Samuel Holland. His regional maps and two topographical descriptions of Lower Canada, published in 1815 and 1831-1832, are still essential references for understanding the territory. Proclamation: 1858.

Origine et signification

C'est en l'honneur de Joseph Bouchette (1774-1841) que ce canton situé à 75 km au nord-ouest de Hull fut désigné. Parmi les très nombreuses étendues d'eau qui s'y trouvent, le lac des Cèdres, le Petit lac des Cèdres et le lac Blue Sea, habités sur leur pourtour, appartiennent au bassin hydrographique de la rivière Gatineau qui coule à l'est du canton.

Joseph Bouchette, qui eut une carrière civile et militaire, s'est illustré comme arpenteur général du Bas-Canada en remplacement de son oncle Samuel Holland. Ses cartes régionales et ses deux descriptions topographiques du Bas-Canada, publiées en 1815 et 1831-1832, s'imposent encore comme des références essentielles pour la connaissance du territoire.
