Origin and meaning

The township was named in honor of John By (1779-1836), an English military engineer who was sent to Canada in 1826 with the mission of building a canal between Kingston and Ottawa. He had already been in the country between 1802 and 1811, as a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. In this capacity, he was responsible for improving the fortifications of Quebec and building the Martello towers.

The Rideau Canal was opened in 1832, and the town that emerged on the Ottawa River was first called Bytown, then Ottawa in 1855, before being chosen as the capital of the United Canadas in 1857 by Queen Victoria. John By died in 1836 at the age of 55.

His name was given to a triangular-shaped township located about fifty kilometers north of the Cabonga Reservoir. In the southwest corner of this township, where the border of the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve runs, wind the Gens de Terre River and its tributary, the Wapus River. The name appears on the 1956 map of Quebec. Proclamation: 1966.

Proclamation : 1966.
