Origin and meaning

This flat-lying township includes as much water as land, numerous islands, and several lakes, including the southern portion of the Cabonga Reservoir. Its name, assigned in 1955, commemorates Joseph-Narcisse Cardinal (1808-1838), notary and member of parliament for the county of Laprairie (1834-1838), who met a tragic end.

Although he took no part in the 1837 Insurrection, he nevertheless felt compelled to flee to the United States. Implicated in an uprising in his county, taken prisoner, and convicted of high treason, he was executed in Montreal on December 21, 1838, at the age of 30. He was married and the father of five children.

Ce canton au relief peu marqué comprend autant d'eau que de terre, de nombreuses îles et plusieurs lacs, dont la partie méridionale du réservoir Cabonga. Son nom, attribué en 1955, rappelle la mémoire de Joseph-Narcisse Cardinal (1808-1838), notaire et député du comté de Laprairie (1834-1838), qui connut une fin tragique.

Bien que n'ayant pris aucune part à l'Insurrection de 1837, il se sentit néanmoins contraint de gagner les États-Unis. Impliqué dans un soulèvement dans son comté, fait prisonnier et reconnu coupable de haute trahison, il fut exécuté à Montréal, le 21 décembre 1838, à l'âge de 30 ans. Il était marié et père de cinq enfants.
