Origin and meaning

This canton of the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve is crossed by the road leading from Mont-Laurier to Val-d'Or. Numerous bodies of water—the most remarkable of which is Lake Embarras—share this uninhabited, forested quadrilateral. This name, adopted by the Commission de géographie in 1955, is that of a former French province, Champagne, which provided New France with nearly 200 immigrants from its beginnings until 1759.

It was united with France in 1284 by Philippe le Bel and reunited with the French crown in 1361. During the First World War, particularly in 1915, Champagne was the scene of violent battles. It is universally known as the region producing the prestigious sparkling wine, the production method of which was perfected by Dom Pérignon (1638-1715). Proclamation: 1966.

Ce canton de la réserve faunique La Vérendrye est traversé par la route qui mène de Mont-Laurier à Val-d'Or. De très nombreux plans d'eau – dont le plus remarquable est le lac Embarras – se partagent ce quadrilatère inhabité et couvert de forêts. Cette appellation, adoptée par la Commission de géographie en 1955, est celle d'une ancienne province française, la Champagne, qui a fourni à la Nouvelle-France près de 200 immigrants, des débuts jusqu'en 1759.

Elle fut unie à la France en 1284 par Philippe le Bel et réunie à la couronne de France en 1361. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, notamment en 1915, la Champagne fut le théâtre de violentes batailles. Elle est universellement connue comme région productrice du prestigieux vin mousseux dont le mode d'élaboration fut mis au point par dom Pérignon (1638-1715). Proclamation : 1966.
