Origin and meaning

The municipality of Déléage, in the Outaouais region, located near Maniwaki, was first known as the municipality of the township of Kensington from 1881 to 1930, a name derived from that of an English locality that became a district of West London.

As for Déléage, a name frequently spelled Deleage and Deléage, from which the gentilic Déléageois was derived, it highlights the regional role of the Oblate Father Jean-François-Régis Déléage (1821-1884), born in Haute-Loire and a missionary in the Outaouais region from 1853 to 1879.

He was also appointed superior of the Témiscamingue mission in 1879, which had been founded at his insistence in 1863. He can be considered the founder of about ten parishes in the Outaouais region.

Its name was also used to identify the post office between 1929 and 1967. See: Kensington (township).

Origine et signification

La municipalité de Déléage, en Outaouais, située tout près de Maniwaki, a d'abord été connue comme la municipalité du canton de Kensington de 1881 à 1930, dénomination provenant de celle d'une localité anglaise devenue un quartier de l'ouest de Londres.

Quant à Déléage, dénomination orthographiée fréquemment Deleage et Deléage, dont le gentilé Déléageois a été tiré, il souligne le rôle régional du père oblat Jean-François-Régis Déléage (1821-1884), né en Haute-Loire et missionnaire dans l'Outaouais, de 1853 à 1879.

Il fut également nommé supérieur de la mission du Témiscamingue en 1879, laquelle avait été fondée sur ses instances en 1863. Il peut être considéré comme le fondateur d'une dizaine de paroisses outaouaises.

Son nom a également servi à identifier le bureau de poste entre 1929 et 1967. Voir : Kensington (canton).
