Origin and meaning

Devine Township is bathed to the south by Waskéga Bay, a branch of the Cabonga Reservoir. Except for a few houses north of the bay, it is uninhabited and covered with numerous small lakes scattered over an area whose summits are around 425 m. The Jesuit Edward James Devine (1860-1927), born in Aylmer, Quebec, has been honored in the name of this geographical division since 1955.

Ordained a priest in Stoneyhurst, England, in 1889, he became a missionary in northern Ontario and English editor of the Canadian Messenger of the Sacred Heart (1891-1927). Postulator of the cause for beatification of the Canadian Jesuit martyrs, he dedicated several pamphlets to them, which were published in English and French between 1923 and 1925. He also published a work on the history of Caughnawaga (Kahnawake). Proclamation: 1966.

Origine et signification

Le canton de Devine est baigné au sud par la baie de Waskéga, une ramification du réservoir Cabonga. Si l'on excepte quelques maisons au nord de la baie, il est inhabité et couvert de nombreux petits lacs disséminés sur une surface dont les sommets se situent autour de 425 m.

Le jésuite Edward James Devine (1860-1927), né à Aylmer au Québec, est honoré dans la dénomination de cette division géographique depuis 1955. Ordonné prêtre à Stoneyhurst (Angleterre) en 1889, il est devenu missionnaire dans le nord de l'Ontario et rédacteur anglais du Messager canadien du Sacré-Cœur (1891-1927). Postulateur de la cause de béatification des martyrs jésuites canadiens, il leur a consacré plusieurs opuscules qui furent publiés en anglais et en français, entre 1923 et 1925. Il a aussi publié un ouvrage sur l'histoire de Caughnawaga (Kahnawake). Proclamation : 1966.
