Origin and meaning

Since 1955, this name has identified a township located northeast of the municipality of Rapides-des-Joachims, on the north bank of the Ottawa River. It is an irregularly shaped geographical area covered in forests, uninhabited and made up of hills varying around 400 m in altitude. It is mainly bathed by Lake Dontenwill and the western part of Lake Saint-Patrice, which feeds the Black River, a tributary of the Ottawa River. Oblate Father Augustin Dontenwill (1857-1931) was a Frenchman from the Bas-Rhin region. Ordained a priest in Ottawa in 1885, he taught there for four years and later (1908) became the first Archbishop of Vancouver and Superior General of the Oblates. Proclamation: 1966.

Ce nom identifie depuis 1955 un canton situé au nord-est de la municipalité de Rapides-des-Joachims, sise sur la rive nord de la rivière des Outaouais. Il s'agit d'un espace géographique de forme irrégulière couvert de forêts, inhabité et constitué de collines variant autour de 400 m d'altitude. Il est principalement baigné par le lac Dontenwill et la partie ouest du lac Saint-Patrice qui alimente la rivière Noire, affluent de l'Outaouais. Le père oblat Augustin Dontenwill (1857-1931) était un Français originaire du Bas-Rhin. Ordonné prêtre à Ottawa en 1885, il y enseigna pendant quatre ans et devint plus tard (1908) premier archevêque de Vancouver et supérieur général des Oblats. Proclamation : 1966.
