Origin and meaning

Between Hull and Grand-Remous, we find the township of Dorion, located about sixty kilometers south of the La Vérendrye wildlife reserve. On its undulating terrain not exceeding 396 m, Cayamant Lake, at a lower altitude of 198 m, discharges via the stream of the same name into the Picanoc River, to the south and outside the township quadrilateral; as a result, it belongs to the Gatineau River hydrographic network.

The shores of Cayamant Lake are inhabited, particularly to the northeast in Cayamant, as are those of Patterson, Moulin and Fairburn lakes which are surrounded by hills. The township was named in honor of Antoine-Aimé Dorion (1818-1891), a long-time Liberal MP and minister.

Origine et signification

Entre Hull et Grand-Remous, on retrouve le canton de Dorion, situé à une soixantaine de kilomètres au sud de la réserve faunique La Vérendrye. Sur son terrain formé d'ondulations n'excédant pas 396 m, le lac Cayamant, à une altitude inférieure de 198 m, se décharge par le ruisseau du même nom dans la rivière Picanoc, au sud et à l'extérieur du quadrilatère cantonal; de ce fait, il appartient au réseau hydrographique de la rivière Gatineau.

Les rives du lac Cayamant sont habitées, particulièrement au nord-est à Cayamant, ainsi que celles des lacs Patterson, du Moulin et Fairburn qui sont entourés de collines. Le canton a été nommé en l'honneur d'Antoine-Aimé Dorion (1818-1891), longtemps député libéral et ministre.
