Origin and meaning

Eardley Township lies on the north bank of the Ottawa River, about 15 km west of Hull. Its name is believed to be taken from the village of Eardley End in Staffordshire, England. Its upper, uncleared northern part is bathed by several small bodies of water surrounding Lake Philippe and Lake Mousseau and has an area whose altitude exceeds 400 m. As for its lower, cleared part, it extends at an altitude of less than 120 m and corresponds to the former major bed of the Ottawa River. It contains the hamlets of Eardley, Luskville, Heyworth, and Breckenridge. The name of this township already appeared on the Gale and Duberger map in 1795. Proclamation: 1806.

Le canton d'Eardley s'étend sur la rive nord de la rivière des Outaouais, à 15 km environ à l'ouest de Hull. Son nom serait emprunté à celui du village d'Eardley End, dans le Staffordshire, en Angleterre. Sa partie haute et non défrichée, au nord, est baignée par plusieurs petites étendues d'eau entourant les lacs Philippe et Mousseau et présente une surface dont l'altitude dépasse 400 m. Quant à sa partie basse qui est défrichée, elle se déploie à une altitude inférieure à 120 m et correspond à l'ancien lit majeur de la rivière des Outaouais. On y trouve les hameaux d'Eardley, de Luskville, de Heyworth et de Breckenridge. Le nom de ce canton apparaissait déjà sur la carte de Gale et Duberger en 1795. Proclamation : 1806.
