Origin and meaning

This canton, located approximately 40 km southwest of the Cabonga reservoir, is irrigated from north to south by the Coulonge River and bathed in particular by lakes Brûlé, Pomponne, and Malone. The Marais and Kane streams drain most of the land, whose elevation varies between 320 and 488 m above sea level.

This uninhabited and forested territorial unit, designated in 1955 under the name of Égriselles, recalls the memory of Jean-Baptiste Dubois d'Esgriseilles, a priest who held, for a time, the position of chaplain of the Carignan regiment. Arriving in Quebec with the companies of the Marquis Henri de Chastelard de Salières in 1665, he accompanied the expedition of Pierre de Saurel led in September 1666 against the Mohawks south of Lake Ontario.

Passing through Trois-Rivières in 1671, this clergyman, about whom little is known, had left the colony before 1680. It was in 1985 that the spelling Esgriseilles replaced that of Égriselles. Proclamation: 1966.

Ce canton, situé à environ 40 km au sud-ouest du réservoir Cabonga, est irrigué du nord au sud par la rivière Coulonge et baigné notamment par les lacs Brûlé, Pomponne et Malone. Les ruisseaux des Marais et Kane drainent la plus grande partie du terrain dont l'élévation varie entre 320 et 488 m d'altitude.

Cette unité territoriale, inhabitée et couverte de forêts, désignée en 1955 sous le nom d'Égriselles, rappelle la mémoire de Jean-Baptiste Dubois d'Esgriseilles, prêtre qui occupa, pendant un certain temps, la fonction d'aumônier du régiment de Carignan.

Arrivé à Québec avec les compagnies du marquis Henri de Chastelard de Salières en 1665, il accompagna l'expédition de Pierre de Saurel menée en septembre 1666 contre les Agniers au sud du lac Ontario. De passage à Trois-Rivières en 1671, cet ecclésiastique dont on connaît peu de chose, avait quitté la colonie avant 1680.

C'est en 1985 que la graphie Esgriseilles a remplacé celle d'Égriselles. Proclamation : 1966.
