Origin and meaning

Near Montebello, further east in the Outaouais region, lies the municipality of Fassett, also located near the Quebec-Ontario border.

In 1845, the municipality of Petite-Nation was established, whose boundaries included the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, canonically erected in 1831. This name originated from the seigneury of La Petite-Nation, granted in 1674 to Monseigneur de Laval. The municipality of Petite-Nation was abolished in 1847 and in 1855, the municipality of the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours was established, from which the municipality of the village of Montebello separated in 1878. Known by this name until 1951, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours was then given the status of municipality and took the name Fassett.

This name change was intended to pay tribute to Jacob Sloat Fassett (Elmira, New York, 1853 - Vancouver, British Columbia, 1924), president of the Haskell Lumber Company founded in 1904 and which became the Fassett Lumber Company in 1910. The large mills managed by Fassett gave birth to the parish of Saint-Fidèle de Fassett in 1913. As early as 1906, the post office took the name Fassett, coming from the small Canadian Pacific railway station that had been so identified a few years earlier. Since March 1986, the citizens of this municipality have officially been called Fassettois.

Près de Montebello, plus à l'est, en Outaouais, on retrouve la municipalité de Fassett, également située à proximité de la frontière du Québec et de l'Ontario.

En 1845, on assistait à l'établissement de la municipalité de Petite-Nation, dont les limites comprenaient la paroisse de Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, canoniquement érigée en 1831. Cette dénomination avait pour origine celle de la seigneurie de La Petite-Nation concédée en 1674 à monseigneur de Laval. La municipalité de Petite-Nation sera abolie en 1847 et on assistera, en 1855, à l'érection de la municipalité de la paroisse de Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours, dont la municipalité du village de Montebello se détachera en 1878. Connue sous ce nom jusqu'en 1951, Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours allait alors recevoir le statut de municipalité et prendre le nom Fassett.

Lors de ce changement dénominatif, on a voulu rendre hommage à Jacob Sloat Fassett (Elmira, New York, 1853 - Vancouver, Colombie-Britannique, 1924), président de la Haskell Lumber Company fondée en 1904 et devenue la Fassett Lumber Company en 1910. Les importants moulins administrés par Fassett ont donné naissance à la paroisse de Saint-Fidèle de Fassett en 1913. Dès 1906, le bureau de poste prenait d'ailleurs l'appellation Fassett provenant de la petite gare ferroviaire du Canadien Pacifique ainsi identifiée quelques années auparavant. Depuis mars 1986, les citoyens de cette municipalité portent officiellement le nom de Fassettois.
