Origin and meaning

This township is located between Jamot and Houdet, in the Pontiac MRC, at the southern edge of the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. This territorial division, crossed from north to south by the Coulonge River, is also bathed by Ward, Larive, Boissadel and several other lakes.

The name of this township, accepted in 1955, recalls Edward John Horan (1817-1875), born in Quebec City, who, after his ordination, became a professor of English and natural sciences at the Petit Séminaire de Québec. First superior of the École normale Laval in 1856, he was consecrated bishop of the diocese of Kingston in 1858 and held this office until his resignation in 1874.

Ce canton est situé entre ceux de Jamot et de Houdet, dans la MRC de Pontiac, à la limite sud de la réserve faunique La Vérendrye. Cette division territoriale, parcourue du nord au sud par la rivière Coulonge, est également baignée par les lacs Ward, Larive, Boissadel et plusieurs autres.

Le nom de ce canton, accepté en 1955, rappelle Edward John Horan (1817-1875), né à Québec, qui, après son ordination, devint professeur d'anglais et de sciences naturelles au Petit Séminaire de Québec. Premier supérieur de l'École normale Laval, en 1856, il est sacré évêque du diocèse de Kingston en 1858 et exercera cette fonction jusqu'à sa démission survenue en 1874.
