Origin and meaning

This municipality in the MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais, nestled in the hills, is located near Gatineau Park, on the right bank of the Gatineau River. It was created in 1975 from the merger of the municipalities of Wakefield Township (1845), Aldfield (1877), the village of Wakefield (1917), and the municipality of Sainte-Cécile-de-Masham (1940), formerly Masham-Sud (1913). The link between these names, initially assigned to townships, is due to their common origin: they are localities in English Yorkshire.

The chosen name, La Pêche, to which the people of Wakefield were opposed, comes from that of a lake in Gatineau Park and a river full of fish, which, in passing, waters the municipality before flowing into the Gatineau. This name had already been proposed in 1940, when Masham-Sud was changed to Sainte-Cécile-de-Masham, because some people wanted the name Sainte-Cécile-de-la-Pêche, mentioned by Father Alexis de Barbezieux in his History of the Ecclesiastical Province of Ottawa and Colonization in the Ottawa Valley (1897).

Populated around 1847, the territory received a large number of people from York County in England, which explains the denominative origin of the merged villages. Previously, around 1825, logging companies were operating in the region, and some lumberjacks, attracted by the surrounding arable fields, settled there and founded, around 1840, the mission of Sainte-Cécile-de-la-Pêche, which was civilly established in 1871. In 1853, the place had 393 French Canadians and 52 Irish.

Cette municipalité de la MRC des Collines-de-l'Outaouais, blottie précisément dans des collines, se situe à proximité du parc de la Gatineau, sur la rive droite de la rivière Gatineau. Elle est née, en 1975, du regroupement des municipalités du canton de Wakefield (1845), d'Aldfield (1877), du village de Wakefield (1917) et de la municipalité de Sainte-Cécile-de-Masham (1940), auparavant Masham-Sud (1913). Le lien qui existe entre ces dénominations, d'abord attribuées à des cantons, a rapport à leur origine commune : il s'agit de localités du Yorkshire anglais.

Le nom choisi, La Pêche, auquel étaient opposés les gens de Wakefield, provient de celui d'un lac du parc de la Gatineau et d'une rivière très poissonneuse, qui, au passage, arrose la municipalité, avant de se déverser dans la Gatineau. Ce nom avait déjà été proposé en 1940, lors de la modification de Masham-Sud en Sainte-Cécile-de-Masham, car certains désiraient l'appellation Sainte-Cécile-de-la-Pêche, mentionnée par le père Alexis de Barbezieux dans son Histoire de la province ecclésiastique d'Ottawa et de la colonisation dans la vallée de l'Ottawa (1897).

Peuplé vers 1847, le territoire a reçu un grand nombre de gens originaires du comté de York en Angleterre, ce qui explique l'origine dénominative des villages fusionnés. Auparavant, vers 1825, des compagnies forestières procédaient à des coupes de bois dans la région et certains bûcherons, attirés par les champs cultivables des environs, s'y installèrent et fondèrent, vers 1840, la mission de Sainte-Cécile-de-la-Pêche, érigée civilement en 1871. En 1853, l'endroit comptait 393 Canadiens français et 52 Irlandais.
