Origin and meaning

This canton, named in 1955, covers part of the Bras-Coupé–Désert ZEC and the La Vérendrye wildlife reserve, about thirty kilometers northwest of Maniwaki. It is crossed to the north by the Tomasine and Désert rivers, in addition to being bathed by the Désert and Rond lakes and a multitude of small bodies of water that make it a favorite spot for fishermen.

The toponym is part of a group of cantons named after former French administrative divisions. The former province of Maine is located between Normandy, Orléans, Touraine, Anjou, and Brittany. Established as a county in 955, Maine fell under English rule in 1126, was recaptured by France in 1290, and was definitively annexed to the royal domain by Louis XI in 1481. This province provided several dozen pioneers to New France between 1608 and 1759. Its main city is Le Mans.

Proclamation: 1966.
