Origin and meaning

This territorial division of the Pontiac MRC, which is located some 130 km west of Mont-Laurier, is largely occupied by the Saint-Patrice ZEC, where Lake Lamb is located. It is also watered, from north to south, by the Black River, which receives the waters of the Aumond stream.

This canton, which was designated as such in 1955, recalls the March of Aquitaine, a territory established as a county in 944 in favor of Boson, grandson of Roger, Count of Limoges, to form the military frontier zone of Aquitaine, with its capital at Charroux.

Confiscated by François I from the Constable of Bourbon in 1527, the March was reunited with the royal crown in 1531 and obtained the status of a province of France. Today, it corresponds to part of the departments of Haute-Vienne and Creuse. Proclamation: 1966.

Cette division territoriale de la MRC de Pontiac, qui se situe à quelque 130 km à l'ouest de Mont-Laurier, est en grande partie occupée par la zec Saint-Patrice où se trouve notamment le lac Lamb. Elle est de plus arrosée, du nord au sud, par la rivière Noire qui reçoit les eaux du ruisseau Aumond.

Ce canton, qui fut désigné ainsi en 1955, rappelle la Marche d'Aquitaine, territoire érigé en comté en 944 en faveur de Boson, petit-fils de Roger, comte de Limoges, pour former la zone frontière militaire de l'Aquitaine, avec capitale à Charroux.

Confisquée par François Ier sur le connétable de Bourbon en 1527, la Marche fut réunie à la couronne royale en 1531 et obtint le statut de province de France. Elle correspond aujourd'hui à une partie des départements de la Haute-Vienne et de la Creuse. Proclamation : 1966.
