Origin and meaning

Designated in 1915 by the Geographic Commission, this township is located in the southeastern part of the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve, about forty kilometers north of Maniwaki, in the La Vallée-de-la-Gatineau MRC. It is bordered to the east by Mercier Bay of the Baskatong Reservoir and to the north by the Gens de Terre River, which receives the waters of the Serpent River. Its territory is bathed by a few dozen small bodies of water, the most notable of which are Lake Minoming, Lake Chabot, and Lake Coupal.

Its name was chosen in honor of Walter George Mitchell (1877-1935), lawyer and politician. After studying at Bishop's College and McGill University, he was called to the bar in 1901 and practiced law in Montreal. From 1914 to 1924, he represented the riding of Richmond as a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. He was notably treasurer of the province of Quebec in the cabinets of Lomer Gouin and Louis-Alexandre Taschereau, and minister of municipal affairs (1918-1921).

Origine et signification

Désigné en 1915 par la Commission de géographie, ce canton se trouve dans la partie sud-est de la réserve faunique La Vérendrye, à une quarantaine de kilomètres au nord de Maniwaki, dans la MRC de La Vallée-de-la-Gatineau. Il est borné à l'est par la baie Mercier du réservoir Baskatong et au nord, par la rivière Gens de Terre qui reçoit les eaux de la rivière Serpent. Son territoire est baigné par quelques dizaines de petites étendues d'eau dont les plus marquantes sont les lacs Minoming, Chabot et Coupal.

Son nom a été choisi en l'honneur de Walter George Mitchell (1877-1935), avocat et politicien. Après ses études au Bishop's College et à l'Université McGill, il est admis au barreau en 1901 et pratiquera le droit à Montréal. De 1914 à 1924, il représente la circonscription de Richmond comme député libéral à l'Assemblée législative du Québec. Il sera notamment trésorier de la province de Québec dans les cabinets de Lomer Gouin et de Louis-Alexandre Taschereau, et ministre des Affaires municipales (1918-1921).
