Origin and meaning

The municipality of Montpellier, which takes its name from the post office established in 1889, was born in 1920 from a group of municipalized territories neighboring the townships of Ripon, Hartwell, Mulgrave, and Lathbury in Outaouais. In 1998, part of the unorganized territory of Lac-des-Écorces was annexed to Montpellier, so that, located 30 km northwest of Papineauville, it is surrounded by the municipalities of Val-des-Bois to the west and Lac-Simon to the east, while belonging to the townships of Hartwell, Ripon, and now Lathbury in its northwest part.

It has been argued that the people of Montpellier, whose ancestors founded the mission of Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation in 1902, owe their gentilic name to a town in the south of France or to a locality in the state of Vermont whose spelling, Montpelier, differs by the deletion of an 'l'. However, it appears more likely that it is the surname of a postmaster from the beginning of the century, Louis Beaulieu, known as Montpellier. In 1902, he opened a post office 11 km north of Ripon, although he had been living on a farm since 1892.

However, his girlfriend, Albina Bissonnette, having grown tired of traveling this distance two days a week to bring him the mail from Ripon, ordered him to marry her. Once this union was accomplished, the couple settled in the locality identified as Montpellier today.

En 1998, une partie du territoire non-organisé de Lac-des-Écorces fut annexée à Montpellier, si bien que sise à 30 km au nord-ouest de Papineauville, elle est enserrée par les municipalités de Val-des-Bois, à l'ouest, et de Lac-Simon, à l'est, tout en appartenant aux cantons d'Hartwell et de Ripon, et maintenant à celui de Lathbury dans sa partie nord-ouest.

On a soutenu que les Montpelliérois, dont les ancêtres ont fondé la mission de Notre-Dame-de-la-Consolation en 1902, doivent leur gentilé à une ville du sud de la France ou à une localité de l'État du Vermont dont la forme graphique Montpelier, diffère, par suppression d'un l. Toutefois, il appert davantage qu'il s'agit du patronyme d'un maître de poste du début du siècle, Louis Beaulieu, dit Montpellier. Celui-ci ouvre, en 1902, un bureau de poste à 11 km au nord de Ripon, alors qu'il était installé depuis 1892 sur une ferme.

Or, son amie de cœur, Albina Bissonnette, s'étant lassée de parcourir cette distance deux jours par semaine pour lui apporter le courrier de Ripon, le met en demeure de l'épouser. Cette union accomplie, le couple s'installe dans la localité identifiée comme Montpellier aujourd'hui.
