Origin and meaning

This township is located 30 km northeast of Fort-Coulonge, in the Outaouais region. Its name is taken from the French region where the famous D-Day landings took place on June 6, 1944, towards the end of the Second World War. The Normandy landings are also known by the code name Operation Neptune.

On D-Day, 150,000 Allied soldiers, including 14,000 Canadians, stormed a beach codenamed Juno, while Canadian paratroopers were deployed inland. Following the success of this offensive, fighting continued in Normandy until the liberation of Paris on August 25, 1944.

Ce canton est situé à 30 km au nord-est de Fort-Coulonge, en Outaouais. Son nom reprend celui de la région française où s'est déroulé le célèbre débarquement, le 6 juin 1944, vers la fin de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale.

Le débarquement de Normandie est aussi connu sous le nom de code Opération Neptune. Lors du jour J, 150 000 soldats alliés, dont 14 000 Canadiens, prirent d'assaut une plage portant le nom de code Juno, alors que des parachutistes canadiens étaient déployés à l'intérieur des terres.

Après le succès de cette offensive, les combats se poursuivirent en Normandie jusqu'à la libération de Paris, le 25 août 1944.
