Origin and meaning

This municipality in the Papineau RCM is located between Montebello and Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, on the one hand, and the Ottawa River, on the other, in an environment of lakes and forests. The northern part of the Bonsecours area has several small lakes suitable for fishing.

The territory of this municipality, which belonged religiously to the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours-de-la-Petite-Nation, canonically erected in 1831, was detached from that of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours-de-la-Petite-Nation (1855) in 1918. In 2003, the municipality of the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours-Partie-Nord became the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours.

Despite the fact that this municipal entity, identified as the municipality of the northern part of the parish of Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours in the letters patent presiding over its creation, is relatively recent, it has received the nickname of Cradle of the seigneury of La Petite-Nation (1674). This title is based on the fact that the first chapel erected on the territory dates back to 1821.

Cette municipalité de la MRC de Papineau se trouve entre Montebello et Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, d'une part, et la rivière des Outaouais, d'autre part, dans un environnement de lacs et de forêts. La partie nord de l'espace bonsecouréen compte plusieurs petits lacs propices à la pêche.

Le territoire de cette municipalité, qui ressortissait sur le plan religieux à la paroisse de Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours-de-la-Petite-Nation érigée canoniquement en 1831, a été détaché de celui de Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours-de-la-Petite-Nation (1855) en 1918.

En 2003, la municipalité de la paroisse de Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours-Partie-Nord est devenue la municipalité de Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours. En dépit du fait que cette entité municipale, identifiée comme la municipalité de la partie nord de la paroisse Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours dans les lettres patentes présidant à sa création, est relativement récente, elle a reçu le surnom de Berceau de la seigneurie de La Petite-Nation (1674). Ce titre repose sur le fait que la première chapelle érigée sur le territoire remonte à 1821.
