Origin and meaning

This township in the Outaouais region is watered by the Coulonge River. It takes its name from the island of Oléron located at the mouth of the Charente River, in the Charente-Maritime department. Historically, Oléron belongs to Saintonge.

Traditionally, a land of immigration, Oléron supplied, especially to La Rochelle, tradesmen, pilots and quite often indentured laborers, some of whom came to New France. They were originally from Saint-Denis, Saint-Pierre, Le Château and Chéré.

Several names of former provinces and other places in France designate townships of Pontiac grouped in a systemic way: Oléron, Dauphiné, Gascogne, Rochefort, Marche, Périgord, Auvergne, Provence, Saint-Malo.

This township was designated in 1955. Proclamation: 1966.

Ce canton de la région de l'Outaouais est arrosé par la rivière Coulonge. Il tire sa dénomination de l'île d'Oléron située à l'embouchure de la Charente, département de la Charente-Maritime.

Historiquement, Oléron appartient à la Saintonge.

Traditionnellement terre d'immigration, Oléron fournissait, surtout à La Rochelle, des hommes de métier, des pilotes et assez souvent des engagés dont quelques-uns vinrent en Nouvelle-France. Ils étaient originaires de Saint-Denis, Saint-Pierre, Le Château et Chéré.

Plusieurs noms d'anciennes provinces et autres lieux de France désignent des cantons du Pontiac regroupés d'une façon systémique : Oléron, Dauphiné, Gascogne, Rochefort, Marche, Périgord, Auvergne, Provence, Saint-Malo.

Ce canton a été désigné en 1955. Proclamation : 1966.
