Origin and meaning

The hamlet of Orlo, which stretches along the shores of Blue Sea Lake in the municipality of the same name, is located approximately 20 km southwest of Maniwaki.

At the beginning of the 20th century, when the railway was established in this corner of the northern Outaouais region, six small stations were built along the eastern shore of Blue Sea Lake. One of them was named Orlo by Albert Gamble, a locomotive engineer. The first two letters of the name come from his son's first name, Orvel. It could therefore be a portmanteau word, as the second element, lo, also comes from the first name of an acquaintance of Albert Gamble. A summer post office bore this name from 1922 to 1958.

Another hypothesis regarding the origin of the name Orlo is that it is an acronym for Ontario Railroad and Land Owner.

Origine et signification

Le hameau d'Orlo, qui s'étend en bordure du lac Blue Sea, dans la municipalité du même nom, se trouve à environ 20 km au sud-ouest de Maniwaki.

Au début du XXe siècle, lors de l'établissement du chemin de fer dans ce coin du nord de l'Outaouais, six petites gares sont construites le long de la rive est du lac Blue Sea. L'une d'elles est baptisée Orlo par Albert Gamble, conducteur de locomotive. Les deux premières lettres du toponyme proviendraient du prénom de son fils, Orvel. Il pourrait donc s'agir ici d'un mot-valise, car le second élément, lo, serait également extrait d'un prénom d'une connaissance d'Albert Gamble. Un bureau de poste estival a porté cette appellation de 1922 à 1958.

Une autre hypothèse quant à l'origine du nom Orlo serait qu'il s'agit d'un acronyme d'Ontario Railroad and Land Owner.
