Origin and meaning

About thirty kilometers north of Montebello, this imperfectly rectangular and small township is characterized by a relief varying between 182 m, the level where Philisson Creek flows, and 381 m, the summit of Mount Cemetery. Sparsely populated, its population is found in the hamlets of Brookdale and Boileau, more around Maskinongé Bay and Lakes Loup, Champagneur and Croix. This toponym noted on the Gale and Duberger map of 1795 is probably borrowed from the surname of a great family of the British aristocracy who, for a long time, monopolized the government of Ireland, until 1767. This family was ousted by Townshend in 1771, after a short period of fierce rivalries. Proclamation: 1876. See: Boileau (municipality).

À une trentaine de kilomètres au nord de Montebello, ce canton imparfaitement rectangulaire et de faibles dimensions, se caractérise par un relief variant entre 182 m, niveau où coule le ruisseau Philisson, et 381 m, le sommet du mont du Cimetière. Peu peuplé, on rencontre sa population dans les hameaux de Brookdale et de Boileau, davantage autour de la baie Maskinongé et des lacs au Loup, Champagneur et à la Croix. Ce toponyme relevé sur la carte de Gale et Duberger de 1795 est probablement emprunté au patronyme d'une grande famille de l'aristocratie britannique qui, pendant longtemps, a monopolisé le gouvernement de l'Irlande, jusqu'en 1767. Cette famille fut délogée par Townshend en 1771, après une courte période de féroces rivalités. Proclamation : 1876. Voir : Boileau (municipalité).
