Origin and meaning

Located about 25 km northwest of Montebello, this township, whose southern outline forms a broken line, is watered by several small streams, almost all of which flow towards the Petite Nation River, the main watercourse of this territory. The river flows at an altitude of about 170 m near Mount Vézeau.

Besides the village of Ripon, the population is distributed along the roads, around certain bodies of water such as Lakes Viceroy, Grosleau, and Schryer, and in the hamlets of Valencay and Lac-Grosleau.

This toponym appears on the Gale and Duberger map in 1795, under the spelling Rippon. The name of the township could recall a town in Yorkshire, England.

Origine et signification

Situé à 25 km environ au nord-ouest de Montebello, ce canton dont le contour au sud forme une ligne brisée est arrosé par plusieurs petits ruisseaux qui s'orientent presque tous vers la rivière de la Petite Nation, principal cours d'eau de ce territoire qui coule à environ 170 m d'altitude près du mont Vézeau.

Outre le village de Ripon, la population se distribue le long des routes, autour de certaines nappes d'eau comme les lacs Viceroy, Grosleau et Schryer, et dans les hameaux de Valencay et de Lac-Grosleau.

Ce toponyme paraît sur la carte de Gale et Duberger en 1795, sous la graphie Rippon. Le nom du canton pourrait rappeler une ville du Yorkshire, en Angleterre.
