Origin and meaning

13 km north of Papineauville, east of Saint-Sixte and Ripon in the Outaouais region, on the banks of the Petite Nation River, stands the municipality of Saint-André-Avellin. The first settlers arrived on the territory in 1841 and, by 1845, formed a parish that would be canonically established in 1851. In 1855, the parish municipality and the post office, then known as Saint-André-Avelin, were created.

Here is how Stanislas Drapeau described the place in 1863: "There is a pretty village already formed where several merchants do solid business." A wooden church measuring 50 feet by 30 feet, and a presbytery, were built in the center of the village, and a priest has resided there since 1850.

In 1911, the village municipality of Saint-André-Avellin was created following its detachment from the parish municipality. In 1997, the village municipality and the parish municipality merged to form the new municipality of Saint-André-Avellin, where the people of Avellinois live.

By retaining this name, we wanted to pay tribute to André Trudeau, surveyor, who, in 1832, divided the farm lots that occupied part of the seigneury of La Petite-Nation, the area of which would correspond to the future parish. He was the nephew of Louis-Joseph Papineau, seigneur of La Petite-Nation.

However, the name Saint Andrew Avellino evokes Saint Andrew Avellino or Avellino (Castronuovo, 1521 - Naples, 1608). Called Lancelot in civilian life, he entered the Theatine order and took the name Andrew in memory of the apostle Saint Andrew. Avellino represents a city in southern Italy, in Campania. A missionary in Lombardy and Naples, Andrew Avellino was canonized in 1712.

It should be noted that another municipality, about ten kilometers south of Saint Andrew Avellino, is called Piacenza.

À 13 km au nord de Papineauville, à l'est de Saint-Sixte et de Ripon en Outaouais, sur les bords de la rivière de la Petite Nation, se dresse la municipalité de Saint-André-Avellin. Les premiers défricheurs se présentent sur le territoire en 1841 et forment, dès 1845, une paroisse qui sera érigée canoniquement en 1851.

En 1855, on créait la municipalité de paroisse ainsi que le bureau de poste connu alors sous le nom de Saint-André-Avelin. Voici comment Stanislas Drapeau décrivait l'endroit en 1863 : « Il y a un joli village déjà formé où plusieurs marchands y font de solides affaires. Une église en bois de 50 pieds sur 30, et un presbytère, sont construits au centre du village, et un prêtre y réside depuis 1850. »

En 1911, la municipalité du village de Saint-André-Avellin est créée à la suite de son détachement de la municipalité de paroisse. En 1997, la municipalité de village et la municipalité de paroisse se regroupent pour constituer la nouvelle municipalité de Saint-André-Avellin où vivent les Avellinois.

En retenant cette appellation, on a voulu rendre hommage à André Trudeau, arpenteur, qui procède, en 1832, à la division des lots de ferme qui occupent une partie de la seigneurie de La Petite-Nation dont la superficie correspondra à la future paroisse. Celui-ci est le neveu de Louis-Joseph Papineau, seigneur de La Petite-Nation.

Cependant, le nom de Saint-André-Avellin évoque saint André Avellin ou Avellino (Castronuovo, 1521 - Naples, 1608). Dénommé Lancelot dans la vie civile, il entre dans l'ordre des Théatins et prend le nom d'André en souvenir de l'apôtre saint André. Avellino représente une ville de l'Italie méridionale, en Campanie.

Missionnaire en Lombardie et à Naples, André Avellin(o) sera canonisé en 1712. Il est à noter qu'une autre municipalité, à une dizaine de kilomètres au sud de Saint-André-Avellin, s'appelle Plaisance.
