Origin and meaning

Bathed by the waters of Lac des Îles to the north, Lac Tremblant to the west and Lac Quesnel to the northeast, the territory of this Outaouais municipality covers an area of ​​some 85 km². This corner of agricultural country, frequented by vacationers, particularly by hunting and fishing enthusiasts due to its numerous lakes, is located 40 km north of Montebello.

Founded in 1874, the parish of Saint-Émile-de-Suffolk was canonically erected in 1889. By retaining this name, we wanted to pay tribute to Émile Quesnel (Rigaud, 1837 – Saint-André-Avellin, 1887), who had been particularly generous to the first settlers of the area.

Municipal history begins with the creation of the municipality of Suffolk Township in 1880, to which Addington Township was annexed in 1885 to form the municipality of the united townships of Suffolk and Addington, which took its current name in 1994.

Suffolk Township (1874), from which the demonym Suffolkien was derived, recalls a county in England. It is, however, not without interest to note that at the end of the 18th century, a Suffolk Township was planned, neighboring Buckingham, and a Norfolk Township, both bounded to the south by the Ottawa River. Norfolk was never actually created and Suffolk was moved inland. See: Addington (township).

Baigné par les eaux des lacs des Îles au nord, Tremblant à l'ouest et Quesnel au nord-est, le territoire de cette municipalité de l'Outaouais couvre une superficie de quelque 85 km². Ce coin de pays agricole et fréquenté par les villégiateurs, notamment par les amateurs de chasse et de pêche en raison de ses nombreux lacs, se retrouve à 40 km au nord de Montebello.

Fondée en 1874, la paroisse de Saint-Émile-de-Suffolk fera l'objet d'une érection canonique en 1889. En retenant cette dénomination, on a voulu rendre hommage à Émile Quesnel (Rigaud, 1837 – Saint-André-Avellin, 1887), qui s'était montré particulièrement généreux à l'endroit des premiers colons des lieux.

L'histoire municipale commence avec la création de la municipalité du canton de Suffolk en 1880, à laquelle a été annexé le canton d'Addington en 1885 pour former la municipalité des cantons unis de Suffolk-et-Addington qui prendra l'appellation actuelle en 1994.

Le canton de Suffolk (1874), dont on a tiré le gentilé Suffolkien, rappelle un comté d'Angleterre. Il n'est toutefois pas sans intérêt de signaler qu'à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, on avait prévu un canton de Suffolk, voisin de Buckingham et un de Norfolk, les deux délimités au sud par l'Outaouais. Norfolk n'a jamais été effectivement créé et Suffolk a été déplacé à l'intérieur des terres. Voir : Addington (canton).
