Origin and meaning

This township is bathed by Philomène and Sable bays, two long tentacles of the Baskatong reservoir, and bounded to the west by the Gatineau River, near which the municipality of Grand-Remous was grafted. Partially cleared around Grand-Remous and along the roads parallel to the Gatineau, its territory presents a relief made up of low hills that vary between 200 and 380 meters in altitude.

The naming of this geographical division was intended to honor Louis-Victor Sicotte (1812-1889), a lawyer born in Boucherville, admitted to the bar in 1838, the same year he opened his law office in Saint-Hyacinthe. A Member of Parliament under the Union from 1851 to 1863, he held the positions of Minister of Crown Lands (1853), Speaker of the House (1854-1857), Minister of Public Works (1857-1859), Attorney General and President of the Council (1862-1863), before being appointed judge of the Superior Court of Lower Canada for the district of Saint-Hyacinthe.

Sicotte contributed in 1834 to the founding of the society Aide-toi, le Ciel t'aidera. This organization was inspired by a French society founded in 1827 which contributed to the July Revolution of 1830. He was the secretary-treasurer of this society which took the initiative to propose that the national holiday of French Canadians be fixed on June 24. Proclamation: 1865.

Ce canton est baigné par les baies Philomène et au Sable, deux longues tentacules du réservoir Baskatong, et limité à l'ouest par la rivière Gatineau, près de laquelle s'est greffée la municipalité de Grand-Remous. Partiellement défriché autour de Grand-Remous et le long des chemins parallèles à la Gatineau, son territoire présente un relief constitué de faibles collines qui varie entre 200 et 380 m d'altitude.

En nommant cette division géographique, on a voulu honorer Louis-Victor Sicotte (1812-1889), avocat né à Boucherville, admis au barreau en 1838, l'année même où il a ouvert son cabinet juridique à Saint-Hyacinthe. Député sous l'Union de 1851 à 1863, il a occupé les charges de ministre des Terres de la Couronne (1853), de président de la Chambre (1854-1857), de ministre des Travaux publics (1857-1859), de procureur général et de président du Conseil (1862-1863), avant d'être nommé juge à la Cour supérieure du Bas-Canada pour le district de Saint-Hyacinthe.

Sicotte a contribué en 1834 à la fondation de la société Aide-toi, le Ciel t'aidera. Cet organisme est inspiré d'une société française fondée en 1827 laquelle a contribué à la révolution de juillet de 1830. Il fut le secrétaire-trésorier de cette société qui prendra l'initiative de proposer que la fête nationale des Canadiens français soit fixée au 24 juin. Proclamation : 1865.
